Jill Barnes set up
40+ Recruitment Agency in 1996. She has over forty years experience in the recruitment industry working for some of the top agencies in senior positions.
In the late 1980's and early 90's Jill had her own group of agencies starting with £70 and building up to a turnover of £2million in two years. After selling her business, she then had a period of five years working firstly for an estate agent and then as a fundraiser for a national charity.
During this time, she never found any ageism when applying for employment basically because it never occurred to her that anyone would discriminate against her on account of her age. With the help of a friendly lady bank manager who helped her obtain a DTI loan she set up an office in November 1995 began contacting employers extolling the virtues of employing the more mature applicant.
Andrew Smith the local MP who was then Minister for Employment was very helpful and as a result of a visit to her premises where he met some of her success stories, she got some very good publicity which helped to make local companies interested in using her services. Since then, she has appeared on television, in national newspapers, national and local radio, magazines and spoke at conferences and has made the name of 40+ well known both locally and nationally.

"Natural Gas Services is addressing the impact that the changing age profile of the country is having on its recruitment practise by adopting an Age Positive approach to employment. We urge other companies to consider the skills and ability of both younger and older workers to ensure they don't miss out on the best person for the job. Age is not an issue at Natural Gas".
Roy Bailey, Managing Director, Natural Gas Services.
